Benfica Unbeaten Yet Misses Title as Porto Crowned Champions

Benfica has concluded its Primeira Liga campaign unbeaten, finishing second with a total of 32 league games, drawing ten times. Despite this impressive record, they missed out on the Portuguese title, which was secured by Porto, who finished nine points clear and wrapped up the championship with two matches remaining.

Porto, managed by André Villas-Boas, lost only once during the season and will complete their campaign without defeat if they avoid losses in their final two fixtures against Braga and Estoril Praia. This is not the first time Benfica has finished unbeaten without winning the title, as they experienced a similar outcome in the 1977-1978 season.

Porto's title win was confirmed following a 2-2 draw against Famalicão, which sparked frustration from Benfica's president, Rui Costa, who criticized the officiating in that match, particularly regarding a penalty awarded to Famalicão.
