Peter Obi Escapes Assassination Attempt in Benin City

Olumide Akpata, a former Edo State governorship candidate for the Labour Party and current leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), detailed a harrowing incident in Benin City where Peter Obi, a 2027 presidential aspirant, narrowly escaped death during an assassination attempt. The attack occurred while Obi was part of a motorcade leaving the ADC secretariat, where they had gathered for a formal declaration.

Akpata described how they received intelligence about the impending attack and attempted to leave quickly. As they departed, gunfire erupted, with bullets striking vehicles in the convoy.

Akpata noted that anyone in those vehicles would have died, emphasizing the severity of the situation. He also mentioned that a cousin of a friend was injured during the chaos.

The attack, which Akpata characterized as a message to deter electoral participation, raises concerns about the safety of political figures and the state of democracy in Edo State.
