Benue Governor Alia Advocates for Local Government Autonomy

Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia declared that the state is at the forefront of complying with local government autonomy, urging other state governors to implement similar measures. During a press briefing at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Alia referenced constitutional provisions that support local government autonomy and criticized politicians who exploit insecurity for partisan purposes.

He encouraged citizens to engage with local governments directly. Alia mentioned that his administration has allowed local councils to initiate and execute their development projects, thereby reducing bureaucratic burdens.

He also highlighted a recent warning from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the enforcement of local government fund allocations, following a Supreme Court ruling affirming the financial independence of local governments. Tinubu indicated that non-compliance could lead to direct allocations from federal accounts to local councils.

Alia's remarks come as he aims to enhance local governance and ensure that local councils receive their statutory allocations without interference.
