Wike Defends Campaigning Amid EFCC Investigations for Tinubu

Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, asserted that no law prohibits individuals under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from campaigning for votes. He made this statement while defending the composition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign team for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Wike criticized the media and public for double standards regarding political campaign participation, emphasizing that a person under EFCC investigation but not charged can still engage in political activities. He specifically referenced Betta Edu, who was appointed as Director of Women Mobilisation in the APC Presidential Campaign Council and is currently under investigation for financial misappropriation.

Wike argued that individuals facing criminal allegations have previously contested and won elections in Nigeria, highlighting that even those serving prison sentences can campaign for candidates. He reiterated that being investigated does not equate to guilt and defended Edu's inclusion in the campaign structure.
