Olu Jacobs, Nollywood Pioneer, Dies at 84

Olu Jacobs, born Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs on July 11, 1942, in Kano, Nigeria, was a prominent actor in African cinema and theatre, recognized as a godfather of Nollywood. His career spanned over five decades, beginning with his studies at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England.

Jacobs gained fame in the 1970s and 1980s through British television series and films, including "The Goodies" and "The Dogs of War." He returned to Nigeria in 1990, starring in the NTA series "The Third Eye," which marked a significant shift in Nigerian film. Jacobs appeared in over 120 movies, earning the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in 2007 and receiving a National Honour as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in 2011.

He was married to actress Joke Silva since 1989 and was known for his progressive values. Jacobs battled Lewy body dementia in his later years and passed away at age 84, leaving a lasting legacy in the arts.
