BPE DG Gbeleyi Faces Committal Over N112M Pension Case

Ayodeji Gbeleyi, the Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), is facing committal proceedings due to his alleged refusal to comply with a judgment from the National Industrial Court in Abuja. The case involves a claim for N112 million in pension gratuities by three former BPE staff members, which dates back over 20 years.

The court had ruled that the claimants were entitled to their pension benefits, as guaranteed by the Constitution and the Public Enterprises (Privatization and Commercialization) Act. Despite this ruling, BPE maintained that there was no pension scheme in place at the time the claimants left the agency in 2000.

The court condemned BPE's refusal to pay the claimants and ordered a joint payment of N10 million in damages. Gbeleyi's legal team has filed a preliminary objection to dismiss the suit, arguing that the claim is statute-barred.

The committal proceedings are set to commence on February 23, 2026.
