How to Check if the FBI Has a File on You

Individuals in the United States have the right to inquire whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) possesses any records about them, as established under the Privacy Act of 1974. This process involves submitting a formal request to the FBI's Records/Information Dissemination Section.

The most efficient method is through the FBI's electronic system, where applicants must provide their full name, date of birth, place of birth, and current address, along with a government-issued ID for identity verification. Alternatively, requests can be sent by post using the Department of Justice Certification of Identity Form (DOJ-361) or a personal letter that cites the Privacy Act.

Postal requests should be directed to the FBI's office in Winchester, VA. Upon processing, applicants receive a unique FOIPA Request Number to track their request.

The FBI responds via U.S. First-Class Mail, and may withhold information if its release poses a risk to ongoing investigations or national security.
