FBI Investigates Cyber Breach of Recruitment Portal

The FBI is actively investigating a cyber breach of its recruitment portal, FBIJobs.gov, following a claim by the hacking group ShinyHunters that it accessed personal information of FBI employees and job applicants. The FBI stated that the origin of the breach is still undetermined, with investigations ongoing to ascertain whether it originated from within the bureau's systems or through external service providers.

The data reportedly accessed includes names, home addresses, Social Security numbers, and work assignments of nearly agents, as well as names of their family members. Jason Pack, chief executive of Media Rep Global Strategies and a retired supervisory special agent, emphasized the distinction between a personnel data leak and access to classified systems, noting that there is currently no indication of access to classified information.

However, he warned that the combination of personal and work information could facilitate targeted fraud and raise counterintelligence concerns. The FBI continues to collaborate with third-party providers to understand the breach's extent and mitigate risks.
