Nigeria's Ogazi, Onojuvwevwo Lead 400m Semi-Final Charge

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Nigerian quarter-milers Samuel Ogazi and Ella Onojuvwevwo are set to compete in the men’s and women’s 400m semi-finals on Thursday. The Nigerian team consists of two men, Ogazi and Eddidiong Udo, and three women, including Onojuvwevwo, Patience Okon-George, and Esther Joseph.

Ogazi and Onojuvwevwo secured their semi-final spots based on their world rankings, while their teammates qualified through preliminary heats held on Tuesday. In the men’s event, Eddidiong Udo made a notable debut, winning Heat 1 in 45.73 seconds, qualifying him for the semi-finals where he will run from lane eight.

Ogazi will compete in lane five of the opening semi-final. In the women’s event, Patience Okon-George advanced automatically by finishing fourth in her heat with a time of 53.27 seconds, running from lane three, while Esther Joseph, who placed third in her heat with a time of 52.82 seconds, will run from lane four.

Onojuvwevwo will compete in lane seven of the third semi-final. Nigeria aims to leverage its strong representation for multiple finals placements.
