Breaking: Benue Assembly Gets New Speaker, Details Emerge

The Benue State House of Assembly has elected Hon Alfred Emberga Berger as the new Speaker, replacing the former speaker, in a plenary session presided over by the deputy speaker, Lami. The election took place on Sunday, August 24, 2025, with Hon Alfred representing the North State Constituency.

The assembly also resolved to lift the suspension of four members who were previously suspended for attempting to remove the former speaker. The nomination of Hon Alfred as the new speaker was announced by a member representing Makurdi South state constituency, Douglas Akyaa, and seconded by Umoru Apa state constituency.

The new speaker commended the former speaker for his service and commitment to the progress of the house. Governor Hyacinth Alia reacted to the alleged attempt to remove the former speaker, stating that it was a handiwork of some individuals.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Tersoo Kula, released a statement addressing the speculation surrounding the incident.
