Malami and Son Granted N200m Bail in Terrorism Case

On January 7, 2023, Justice Joyc Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Abuja granted former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami and his son Abdulaziz bail amounting to N200 million each on charges related to terrorism and illegal possession of firearms. The court ordered their remand in Kuje Prison until bail conditions are met.

The charges were brought against them by the Department of State Services (DSS). The court also addressed an earlier bail granted to Malami's wife, Hajia Asab Bashir, in a separate money laundering case, which was not recognized.

Justice Emeka Nwite had previously admitted the defendants to bail for N500 million, but the case was reassigned to Justice Abdulmalik. The defendants pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of money laundering, with allegations dating back to November 2015 and involving substantial sums of money.

The next court session for the bail application is scheduled for March 6, 2023.
