DSS to Appeal Life Sentences for Ansaru Commanders

The Department of State Services (DSS) announced plans to appeal the life sentences given to Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara’a, and Abubakar Abba, alias Mahmud al-Nigeri, commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group. Both men pleaded guilty to 32 counts before Justice Emeka Nwite, who sentenced them to life imprisonment.

The DSS, led by Toyin Ajayi, contends that this punishment does not adequately reflect the gravity of their offenses, which include involvement in significant terrorist activities such as the July 2022 Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre attack and the Abuja–Kaduna train attack. Security experts classify Ansaru as one of Nigeria's most dangerous terrorist organizations, with ties to al-Qaeda.

The DSS's appeal raises questions about whether Nigeria's judiciary is imposing sufficient penalties for terrorism, as leaders of such groups are seen as architects of violence rather than mere participants.
