Court Nullifies APC Primary, Orders New Election in Zamfara

On August 31, 2023, Justice Hassan Dikko of a court in Gusau nullified the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Zamfara North Senatorial District, which had selected incumbent Senator Sahabi Ya'u Kaura as the party's candidate for the 2027 general elections. The ruling came after approximately two hours of proceedings, during which the court reviewed written addresses and arguments from both parties involved in the case.

The legal challenge was initiated by Dr Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi, a senatorial aspirant who contested the validity of the primary election process. Following the judgment, Shinkafi expressed that the court's decision had renewed public trust in the judiciary and restored confidence in the justice system.

The APC has been directed to conduct a fresh primary election within 14 days from the date of the ruling.
