DSS to Appeal Life Sentences for Ansaru Terror Commanders

The Department of State Services (DSS) intends to appeal the life sentences imposed on two senior commanders of the Ansaru terrorist group, Mahmud Usman, also known as Abu Bara, and Abubakar Abba, known as Mahmud Al Nigeri. The Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced them to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to 32 counts against them.

DSS officials believe the sentences are lenient and do not adequately reflect the gravity of the crimes committed. The two men were involved in the abduction of teachers in Oriir, Oyo State, where nearly 60 individuals were kidnapped.

During the abduction, the Ansaru command reportedly beheaded two teachers to pressure the government for the release of their members. The DSS argues that the life sentences do not deliver justice for the families affected by these heinous acts.
