Nigerian Senate Extends 2025 Budget Deadline to 2026

The Nigerian Senate has approved a three-month extension for the implementation period of the 2025 Budget, moving the deadline from June 30, 2026, to September 30, 2026. This decision was made following a motion by Senator Tahir Monguno, representing Borno North and serving as the Senate Chief Whip.

The Senate emphasized that the 2025 Appropriation Act is designed to fund government programs aimed at promoting economic growth, infrastructure development, national security, and the welfare of Nigerians. Despite significant releases made to ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), a considerable portion of the funds remains unutilized due to procurement timelines and project implementation challenges.

The Senate warned that failing to extend the implementation period could lead to the abandonment of critical projects and wastage of public resources. This latest extension comes despite President Bola Tinubu's pledge to restore Nigeria's budget cycle to January-December by December 2023 and to end the practice of budget rollover.
