Former Finance Minister Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji Dies at 87

Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, Nigeria's former Minister of Finance and Sardaunan Sokoto, has died at the age of 87 in Abuja, as confirmed by family sources on Thursday. He served as Minister of State for Budget and Planning in 1988 and as Minister of Finance from 1990 to 1991 during General Ibrahim Babangida's administration.

Alhaji also represented Nigeria as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom from 1992 to 1996, where he played a crucial role in strengthening bilateral relations. A career civil servant, he advanced to the position of Permanent Secretary in the Ministries of Finance, Trade, Industries, and National Planning.

As Sardaunan Sokoto, a prestigious traditional title he received in 1990, he acted as a vital link between the government, traditional institutions, and the populace. The family has indicated that funeral arrangements will be announced in accordance with Islamic rites.
