Northern Governors Mourn Former Finance Minister Alhaji

The Northern Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NNGF) expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Minister of Finance, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, who died on Thursday in Abuja. The NNGF Chairman, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, lauded Alhaji's extensive public service, highlighting his roles as Minister of National Planning and Minister of Finance during General Ibrahim Babangida's administration, where he significantly influenced Nigeria's economic policies.

Following his ministerial tenure, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom starting in 1992. Yahaya also acknowledged Alhaji's heritage as a descendant of Shehu Usmanu Danfodiyo and noted his role as a custodian of the Sokoto Caliphate's values.

He described Alhaji's death as a substantial loss to his family, Sokoto State, and the nation, which benefited from his leadership and counsel. Yahaya extended condolences to Alhaji's family, the Sultan of Sokoto, the Sokoto Caliphate, and all Nigerians mourning this loss, praying for Alhaji's eternal peace.
