Windstorm Destroys 1,200 Houses in Niger State

On May 7, 2026, a severe windstorm struck Niger State, resulting in the destruction of around 1,200 houses across six local government areas: Mokwa, Bida, Lavun, Katcha, Gbako, and Mariga. Comrade Abdullahi Baba Arah, the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), provided a situational report detailing the devastation.

Preliminary assessments indicated that Mokwa Local Government Area was significantly affected, with communities such as Sawmil, Kpege, Wayata, Kpege Station, Girigi, Efu, Shaba, Lile, Tifin, Madza, Yafu, and Etisheshi experiencing severe damage. In Bida Local Government Area, affected communities included Cheniyan, Nasarafu, Bariki, Kyari, Dokoza, and Masaga.

Additionally, Lavun, Katcha, Gbako, and Mariga recorded damage to 100 houses in the Durgu community of Bobi Ward. NSEMA is collaborating with relevant stakeholders and local government authorities to conduct detailed assessments to determine the full extent of the damage and the humanitarian needs of the affected victims.
