IGP Tunji Disu Dissolves Special Investigative Unit

On March 2026, Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu announced the dissolution of the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) and the transfer of 88 officers previously assigned to the unit, which was led by former IGP Akin Fakored. This significant restructuring aims to address controversies surrounding the unit, including allegations of extrajudicial activities and political interference.

The personnel will be reassigned to various departments across Nigeria as part of a broader strategy to reform the police force. Aliyu Abubakar has been appointed to oversee the revamped operations of the newly formed entity, which will absorb and reconstitute the former SIU.

The decision to dismantle the unit follows heavy criticism from civil rights groups and aims to break the influence of the previous administration. The move is also linked to allegations against Jesam Michael, CEO of the African Arbitration System, who is accused of defrauding investors in a Ponzi scheme.
