IGP Disu Removes Akin Fakorede from Police Monitoring Unit

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Tunji Disu has officially removed Akin Fakorede from his role as the head of the police monitoring unit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja. This decision comes as part of a broader restructuring within the police force.

Akin Fakorede previously commanded the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and was appointed to lead the police monitoring unit in December 2024. His tenure has been marred by significant criticism from human rights organizations, which have accused him of involvement in extrajudicial killings and other misconduct during his time in charge of SARS.

Civil society groups have raised concerns regarding his record, which they argue undermines public trust in the police monitoring unit. Additionally, allegations of human rights violations and unprofessional conduct have been linked to controversies surrounding land disputes in the River Park Estate, Abuja, and accusations of violence against journalists during protests in September 2025.

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has publicly criticized Fakorede, labeling him a "killer" during a television interview.
