IGP Disu Launches State Policing Committee in Abuja

On Wednesday, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, inaugurated a state policing committee in Abuja, describing this initiative as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria's internal security structure and improving community-based law enforcement. The committee's assignment comes at a critical time, given Nigeria's security challenges that require innovative thinking and collaborative, bold reforms in policing that respond to local realities.

The committee is expected to develop a workable framework for operating state policing in Nigeria without undermining the national security system. Members will review policing models from within and outside the country, assess community security needs, identify potential risks, and propose operational structures to establish a coordinated state policing system.

The IGP emphasized the importance of addressing key issues such as recruitment procedures, training standards, funding, and oversight mechanisms to ensure professionalism and public trust. The committee, chaired by Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, has four weeks to submit its report, addressing concerns regarding the misuse of state policing structures for political purposes.
