IGP Kayode Egbetokun Resigns, Tunji Disu Named Successor

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has resigned from his position following a directive from President Bola Tinubu. This decision was confirmed by senior government officials after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday.

President Tinubu has nominated Tunji Disu, currently an Assistant Inspector General of Police, to replace Egbetokun. A formal handover ceremony is already underway at the police headquarters in Abuja, although official announcements have yet to be released.

Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector General of Police on June 2023, with his appointment ratified by the Nigeria Police Council in October 2023. He was expected to serve until October 2027, but his tenure faced public criticism over allegations of human rights violations during security operations across several states.

As of now, President Tinubu has not issued a formal statement regarding Egbetokun's resignation.
