INEC Registers Two New Political Parties for 2027 Elections, 170 Others Fail Requirements

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered two new political parties, the Democrat Leadership Alliance (DLA) and Nigeria Democrat Congress (NDC), for the upcoming 2027 elections. This decision follows the failure of 170 other associations to meet the constitutional requirements for political party registration.

The registration of NDC was prompted by a Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja, Kogi State. Prof.

Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of INEC, disclosed this information during a meeting in Abuja. The successful parties that met the criteria include the Democrat Leadership Alliance (DLA), which was found to be compliant with all legal requirements.

Amupitan expressed concerns about the increasing leadership disputes within political parties, emphasizing the importance of unity and constructive dialogue for a healthy democracy. The court order to register NDC will be complied with, and the certification process for the new parties will proceed accordingly.
