NASU and SSANU Announce Indefinite Strike Starting May 1

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have confirmed the commencement of an indefinite strike action starting at midnight on May 1, 2026. This decision was communicated in a letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The unions cite the federal government's failure to conclude ongoing negotiations and present a fresh offer as the primary reasons for the strike. Despite a previous circular proposing a 30 percent increase in consolidated non-teaching staff allowances, the unions have stated that this proposal was withdrawn and did not resolve the core issues in dispute.

The leadership of both unions, represented by NASU General Secretary Peter Adeyemi and SSANU President Moham Ibrahim, emphasized that the slow pace of the renegotiation process has not met their demands, leading to the decision for a total comprehensive strike action.
