FG Summons SSANU, NASU to Prevent Nationwide Strike

The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken steps to avert a looming nationwide strike by summoning the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) for a meeting scheduled on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. This meeting comes in response to rising tensions regarding a proposed 30% salary increment for non-academic staff in federal tertiary institutions.

Sources familiar with the developments confirmed that a formal invitation was sent to the unions. The proposal was announced by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, but has been met with strong opposition from the unions, which described the increment as shocking and unacceptable.

A letter signed by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Secretary General, Peter Adeyemi, and President, Moham Ibrahim, insisted that the proposal did not follow due process. The unions have called for the Minister to withdraw the circular, warning that failure to do so could lead to a shutdown of public universities.

Discussions are ongoing, but no agreement has been reached, particularly in light of a recent 40% salary increase for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has heightened concerns among non-academic staff.
