NASU and SSANU to Begin Nationwide Strike May 1, 2026

The National Association of Academic Technologists (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have confirmed the commencement of an indefinite nationwide strike starting at midnight on May 1, 2026. This decision was communicated in a letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the Minister of Education.

The unions cited the federal government's failure to conclude ongoing negotiations and present a fresh offer as the primary reasons for the strike. The letter acknowledged the receipt of previous correspondence but emphasized that the core issues in dispute remain unresolved.

The unions noted that despite a previous circular proposing a 30% increase in consolidated non-teaching staff salaries, no new offer has been made to supersede this. The leadership of the unions stated that due to the government's failure to conclude negotiations by April 30, 2026, the strike action has become inevitable, which is expected to halt administrative support services across tertiary institutions in Nigeria, raising concerns about further disruptions in the university system.
