Oba of Benin Urges Thoughtful Change in Government

On September 15, 2023, the Oba of Benin, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku'Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, addressed members of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) at the Benin Palace. The PCC, led by Director-General Abdulaziz Yari, a former governor, sought royal prayers and blessings for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's re-election campaign for the 2027 elections.

Oba Ewuare II cautioned Nigerians against advocating for governmental change based solely on habit or frustration, emphasizing that any change should stem from genuine reasons rather than sentiment. He clarified that his remarks did not constitute a political endorsement, asserting that the Benin throne remains neutral.

The Oba encouraged political cooperation for the national interest and urged leaders to prioritize the country's needs over party affiliations. Yari highlighted economic progress under the current administration, noting GDP growth from 2.7% to 3.9% and a decrease in inflation from 22.9% to 15.9%.
