Osun Govt Requests Security for New Local Government Chairmen

The Osun State government has formally requested the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Police to ensure the removal of former local government chairmen from the council secretariat, allowing newly elected officials to resume their duties. This request was made in a letter addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police for Zone 11 in Osogbo.

The action follows a ruling by the Federal High Court in Osogbo that dismissed a tenure elongation suit filed by the former local government chairmen, who were previously elected during a controversial election in October 2022. The court ruled that the continued occupation of office by the former chairmen was unconstitutional.

The state government, represented by Musibau Adetunbi, SAN, emphasized the need for the police to remove the illegally occupying chairmen to ensure the safety of local government staff and a smooth transition to the newly elected chairmen, whose elections were held on February 22, 2025.
