Peter Obi Advocates Party-Led Coalition for 2027 Elections

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), asserted that any coalition among opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections must be initiated by the parties themselves rather than through negotiations between individual candidates. He made this statement during an interview on Arise TV on a Thursday, following a summit held by opposition parties in Abuja on August 31 under the G-100 platform to discuss a potential alliance.

Obi clarified that discussions about stepping aside for a vice-presidential role are no longer relevant, as he and Atiku Abubakar represent different parties. He likened the merger process to a corporate acquisition, insisting that party leaderships must structure any formal agreement.

Obi emphasized that a credible coalition should focus on governance, national security, job creation, and economic productivity, rather than merely sharing political offices. He also denied reports that he had declined an offer to serve as Atiku's running mate under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating he was never in a position to receive such an offer.
