Anambra Native Doctor Akwa Okuko Sentenced to Prison

Akwa Okuko, a well-known native doctor in Anambra, was sentenced to two years in prison by Justice Jude Obiorah on Friday for his involvement in aiding kidnapping and conducting money rituals. He pleaded guilty to charges related to local mystic rites and was convicted on multiple counts.

The sentencing follows his arrest in February 2025 by the Agunechemba Security Outfit. Chidozi Nwangwu, another native doctor, was among three individuals implicated in the case.

The court considered Nwangwu's plea bargain and showed remorse during sentencing, which resulted in a concurrent two-year sentence for several counts. Additionally, he has already spent 13 months in detention, meaning he will serve 11 more months.

The court imposed strict conditions for his release, including the demolition of his shrine and a public denouncement of his practices. Furthermore, Nwangwu was appointed as an ambassador for youth reorientation to discourage young people from seeking wealth through supernatural means.
