Tinubu Appoints Tunji Disu as New IGP Amid Resignation

On Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu officially decorated Tunji Disu as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP) during a ceremony held at the State House in Abuja at 4 PM. The event was attended by notable figures including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.

Disu's appointment comes just 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would reach the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, amendments to the Police Act allow the IGP to serve a four-year tenure regardless of age, enabling Disu to remain in office until 2030.

This development follows the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun, who cited family matters requiring his undivided attention. Disu, who was born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos, joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, and has had a distinguished career, including leading the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos.

He is also a third dan black belt judoka and has won multiple medals in national sports events.
