Tinubu Approves 30%-80% Salary Hike for Armed Forces

President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant salary increase for Nigeria’s armed forces personnel, ranging from 30% to 80%, effective September 1, 2026. This decision, announced by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, affects approximately 250,000 personnel.

Officers above the rank of colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals, and Generals, will receive a 30% salary increase. Personnel from colonel down to warrant officer will see a 50% increase, while Privates to Staff Sergeants will benefit from an 80% increase.

This new pay structure will elevate the annual salary expenditure for armed forces personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion. President Tinubu emphasized the importance of supporting and appreciating the armed forces, who confront challenges such as banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.

He reiterated the administration's commitment to troop welfare and the modernization of the military to enhance security across Nigeria.
