Tinubu Orders EFCC to Unfreeze Osun State Accounts

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately unfreeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government by returning to court to vacate the freezing order. This directive comes in light of the upcoming governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Tinubu expressed that he was “deeply embarrassed” by the timing of the EFCC’s decision, which involved obtaining a court order on August 5, 2026, to freeze the accounts. He clarified that while he respects the EFCC's legal powers and independence, the timing of the action could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

Tinubu emphasized that federal agencies' actions are often perceived as linked to the Presidency, even if he is not informed beforehand. He stated that no actions should suggest that any federal agency is being used to influence the election outcome, and he is committed to preserving public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
