Tinubu Orders EFCC to Vacate Osun Accounts Freezing

President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take immediate steps to vacate a court order that froze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government. This directive, issued on Thursday, follows significant public backlash regarding the EFCC's actions, which were based on a court order obtained on August 5, 2026.

Tinubu expressed embarrassment over the timing of the freezing, noting that it could undermine the credibility of the forthcoming governorship election in Osun State. He stated that any action by federal institutions could be perceived as an attempt to influence electoral outcomes.

While reaffirming his administration's commitment to allowing anti-corruption agencies to operate independently, he acknowledged the need for intervention due to the politically sensitive nature of the situation. Tinubu directed the EFCC to return to court to vacate the freezing order and cease all related actions against the Osun State Government, emphasizing the importance of maintaining public confidence in Nigeria's democratic institutions.
