Tinubu Orders EFCC to Vacate Osun Account Freeze

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court to vacate an order that froze the bank accounts of the Osun State government. This directive was issued on Thursday, following the EFCC securing a court order on August 5, 2026.

The President expressed concerns regarding the timing of the action, which coincides with the upcoming Osun governorship election, stating it could create the impression of federal influence over the electoral process. While acknowledging the EFCC's statutory independence, Tinubu emphasized that actions by federal institutions are often perceived as being sanctioned by the Presidency.

He reiterated his policy of non-interference in anti-corruption agencies, stressing the importance of maintaining public confidence in the electoral process. Tinubu stated that the circumstances surrounding the freezing of the accounts warranted his intervention in the public interest, especially with the election approaching.
