Yekini Idiaye Elected New Edo Assembly Speaker

Yekini Idiaye, the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, has been elected as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly on Monday, following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku. Idiaye is serving his third term in the Assembly and was chosen after Agbebaku stepped down amid reports of potential impeachment by fellow lawmakers.

His election aligns with a zoning arrangement that designates the Speaker to come from Edo North Senatorial District when the governor is from Edo Central Senatorial District. As the most senior lawmaker from Edo North, Idiaye was selected to lead the legislative body.

In his remarks after the election, Idiaye noted that typically, the Deputy Speaker would succeed the Speaker in the absence of the zoning arrangement. Blessing Agbebaku's resignation was confirmed by his media aide, Ivy Adodo-Ebojele, who announced the decision via a Facebook post, indicating that further details would be disclosed later.
