British Council Honors Nigerian Leaders in Lagos Ceremony

The British Council celebrated Nigerian leaders in social impact, business, and culture during the 2026 UK Alumni Award ceremony held in Lagos. This event brought together leaders from government, academia, and industry, alongside accomplished alumni whose contributions reflect the enduring value of UK higher education in Nigeria's development.

Awards were presented across four categories. Kola Alapinni, an international human rights lawyer, was honored for his advocacy in defending freedom of religion and belief, particularly for his legal intervention in a high-profile blasphemy case in Kano.

Yemisi Sophi Odusanya, known as Sisi Yemmi, was recognized for her influence in digital storytelling through her food media YouTube platform, showcasing Nigerian cuisine and culture. Dimeji Sofowora, co-founder of Helium Health, was acknowledged for advancing healthcare technology across Africa, impacting millions of patient records.

Additionally, Professor Abdulazeez Ahm from Bayero University Kano received recognition in the science and sustainability category for his pioneering work in audiology training. Donna McGowan, the Country Director of the British Council Nigeria, described the awards as a prestigious global platform celebrating the achievements of UK alumni.
