British Funeral Director Faces Sentencing for Ashes Scandal

Robert Bush, the operator of Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, England, has pleaded guilty to 67 offences involving the mishandling of bodies and fraudulent distribution of ashes over a 12-year period. The sentencing hearing began on March 2024 at Hull Crown Court and is expected to last five days.

Prosecutor Chris Paxton revealed that police discovered 31 decomposing bodies in cold storage, including that of a stillborn baby left for nearly two years. More than 100 sets of ashes were also found.

Victim Jasmine Beverley expressed her devastation upon learning that her stillborn son, Sunny, had not been cremated as promised. Following these revelations, Beverley and other affected families are campaigning for stronger regulations in the funeral industry.

Bush admitted to various offences, including preventing lawful burial and fraud, with specific cases involving the false presentation of ashes to grieving families. The court will hear victim impact statements from over 100 individuals before concluding the sentencing.
