Burnham Announces VAT Cut on Electricity Bills to Aid Households

On October 1, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham will implement a significant tax cut by removing Value Added Tax (VAT) on household electricity bills, marking his first major initiative to address the ongoing cost of living crisis in Britain. This measure is projected to save households an average of £1,862 per year.

To fund this initiative, Burnham plans to cancel a £1.8 billion digital ID program. He emphasized the need to provide people with "breath space" to manage living costs and signaled his determination to improve living standards quickly amid economic pressures.

Labour lawmaker Darren Jones raised concerns regarding the funding of this policy, urging the government to clarify its plans in the next budget. Despite recent geopolitical tensions easing, energy bills remain significantly higher than pre-2022 levels, contributing to ongoing fuel poverty.

Burnham, who recently became Prime Minister, pledged to restore public confidence and tackle issues such as rough sleeping and living standards.
