"Brother Jero Opera Premieres May 16 in Lagos"

"Brother Jero," an opera inspired by Wole Soyinka's play, is set to premiere on May 16 at the National Theatre in Orile-Iganmu, Lagos. The production, directed by Rosalyn Aninyei, features a 50-man orchestra from Vesta Orchestra and will run for 100 minutes, divided into two acts.

The opera aims to satirize religious hypocrisy through humor and is structured with a unique musical score composed by Dr. Seun Owoaj, who incorporates ethno-African sounds.

Aninyei obtained permission from Soyinka three years ago to adapt the play, which is widely recognized across generations. The first act will last 40 minutes, while the second will be 45 minutes, showcasing soloists and a chorus.

The production is expected to transform the stage into a vibrant spectacle, reflecting Nigeria's rich creative talent and drawing parallels between Nigerian and Italian opera traditions.
