Buratai Calls for AU Mediation for ECOWAS Return

On Thursday, during the 2026 Voice Nigeria Forum in Abuja, former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen.

Tukur Buratai (rtd) called on the African Union to facilitate the return of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). These three countries officially left ECOWAS on January 29, 2025, raising concerns about access to justice for victims of serious human rights abuses.

Buratai stressed that the restoration of these nations is crucial for regional unity and cooperation, stating that ECOWAS cannot be whole without them. He highlighted that diplomacy is a viable option to resolve the current regional impasse and urged the African Union to work diligently to ensure their reintegration.

Buratai also noted Nigeria's significant sacrifices in defending democracy and stability in the region. The call for mediation comes amid ongoing challenges in West Africa, where diplomatic efforts are essential for peace and integration.
