Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Withdraw From ICC Amid Allegations of Human Rights Violations

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have jointly announced their withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC) in a move to develop indigenous mechanisms for peace consolidation. The decision comes amidst a deepening alliance between the three countries, known as the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which has been distancing itself from Western influence, particularly France.

Since the 2020 coup, these nations have drawn closer to Russia. The withdrawal from the ICC, effective after one year, follows accusations of human rights violations by the armed forces in the fight against jihadist insurgency.

Established in 2002, the ICC prosecutes grave crimes when national courts are unable or unwilling to act.
