Burkina Faso Cuts Diplomatic Ties with France Amid Tensions

The Burkinabé government announced the severance of diplomatic ties with France, effective immediately, marking a culmination of years of strained relations since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power in September 2022. The government, represented by spokesperson Gilbert Ouédraogo, stated that the decision reflects a need for partnerships based on mutual respect and sovereignty, accusing French authorities of actions detrimental to Burkina Faso's interests.

This diplomatic rupture follows the termination of a military cooperation agreement with France and the withdrawal of French troops from the country. Additionally, Burkinabé authorities have suspended several French media outlets for perceived interference in domestic affairs.

The decision comes amid ongoing tensions and a shift towards strengthening ties with Russia and other Sahel states. Despite the diplomatic break, the government assured that it would continue to protect French nationals residing in Burkina Faso and emphasized its commitment to an independent foreign policy.
