Burkina Faso Cuts Diplomatic Ties with France Amid Tensions

On Friday, Burkina Faso's military-led government, headed by Captain Ibrahim Traor, announced the immediate termination of diplomatic relations with France. This decision follows accusations from Gilbert Ouedraogo, the Minister of Communication, who claimed that France's actions were against Burkina Faso's national interests and constituted interference in its sovereignty.

The government stated that the conditions necessary to maintain diplomatic relations based on mutual respect and non-interference had broken down. Ouedraogo further alleged that France was pursuing neo-colonial ambitions and supporting terrorist networks, contributing to the ongoing insecurity in the Sahel region.

Since Traor's military coup in September 2022, the junta has adopted a strong nationalist agenda, seeking to reduce dependence on former colonial powers and pursue an independent foreign policy. Despite the diplomatic break, the government assured that the historical and cultural ties between the citizens of Burkina Faso and France would remain intact, urging citizens to maintain peace and respect towards foreign residents.
