Athletes traveling to Canada for competitions or professional engagements must satisfy specific immigration requirements beyond merely receiving an invitation. Canada does not have a single visa category for visiting athletes; requirements vary based on nationality, activity type, and payment status.

Athletes must first confirm the appropriate travel document, which may be a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorization (eTA), depending on their nationality and travel mode. Even those exempt from needing a work permit typically still require one of these entry documents.

While some athletes may qualify for work without a permit, this exemption is conditional and not automatic. Athletes must also meet Canada's broader entry requirements, which include demonstrating sufficient funds for living costs and a clear intention to leave after their stay.
