Candlelight Vigil in Kathmandu Honors Flood Victims

On August 26, Nepal experienced devastating flash floods following a high-altitude glacial collapse near the Nepal-Tibet border, leading to a massive surge of water, rocks, and debris. In response, young people gathered for a candlelit vigil in Kathmandu’s Basantapur district to honor the victims.

As of now, 1,331 bodies have been recovered, while approximately 5,000 individuals remain missing. The floods caused significant destruction, sweeping away homes, roads, and bridges, and leaving many areas isolated.

Rescue teams, including international assistance, are actively searching through debris and damaged infrastructure. Families are enduring the painful uncertainty of waiting for news about their missing relatives, with authorities working to identify bodies and collect DNA samples for reunification.

The vigil provided a space for the youth of Nepal to grieve and show solidarity during this tragic time, as the search for survivors continues alongside mourning rituals for those unaccounted for.
