CDHR Raises Alarm Over INEC REC Redeployment in Osun

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has raised significant concerns over the recent redeployment of Dr. Mutiu Agbok, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026, in Osun State.

In a statement issued jointly on Tuesday by Comrade Yinka Folarin, the national president, and Comrade Adewunmi Adesina, the national public secretary, the CDHR warned that this redeployment could negatively affect public confidence in the electoral process if not managed properly. The organization acknowledged that staff transfers fall within INEC's responsibilities but noted that such changes during a politically sensitive period raise questions about neutrality.

They highlighted early signs of unrest, including protests linked to the appointment of Mr. Toyin Babalola as the new REC, indicating deeper concerns within the political environment of Osun State.

The CDHR called for a neutral approach in appointing a replacement and suggested that a new REC be sourced from outside the immediate region to help alleviate tensions and maintain electoral credibility.
