Wellington Clinics Halts Kidney Transplants Amid Probe

Wellington Clinics, located in Abuja, has suspended all renal transplant-related services following an ongoing investigation by the Nigeria Police Force into alleged organ harvesting and human trafficking. The investigation pertains to a kidney transplant performed on April 24, 2026, involving a 22-year-old man, Samuel Ezekiel, who was allegedly deceived into donating his kidney for $1,250 (approximately N1.7 million).

Wellington Clinics has denied any involvement in financial arrangements concerning the donor or recipient, stating that the donor was admitted under the name Abubakar Hassan and that the procedure was conducted by a specialist team led by Dr. Benjamin Friday Oyimeh, the Chief Executive Officer of Crown Medical and Kidney Centre. The clinic clarified that it only provided an equipped operating theatre and did not participate in any transactional arrangements.

It emphasized that the procedure complied with the National Health Act 2014 and that neither the donor nor recipient suffered adverse outcomes from the operation.
