No Fixed Price for Kidney Donations, Says Surgeon

Dr. Torngee Malu, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, addressed the question of the monetary value of kidney donations during an appearance on Channels Television’s Morning Brief. He clarified that there is no fixed price for a human kidney, emphasizing that organ donation should not be viewed merely in terms of financial compensation.

Malu noted that while the law allows for reimbursement or compensation, it does not specify a set price. He argued that kidney disease affects individuals across all income levels, and prioritizing access to transplantation is more important than assigning a monetary value to organs.

Malu also distinguished between legal organ donation and illegal trafficking, stating that kidney harvesting is a specialized procedure requiring trained professionals. He mentioned that the Federal Ministry of Health expanded the legal framework for organ donation with guidelines issued in 2025.
