No Fixed Price for Human Kidneys, Says Surgeon Malu

Dr. Torngee Malu, a Consultant Plastic Surgeon, stated on Channels Television’s Morning Brief that there is no fixed monetary value for human kidneys, dismissing the notion of reducing organ donation to a sale price. He emphasized that the law permits reimbursement or compensation but does not specify a price for organs.

Malu pointed out that kidney disease affects individuals across all income levels, not just the wealthy, and that framing organ donation in monetary terms misrepresents the needs of those requiring transplants. He distinguished between legitimate kidney transplantation and illegal organ trafficking, asserting that the two should not be conflated.

Malu noted that the legal framework for organ donation was updated by guidelines from the Federal Ministry of Health in 2025. He explained that kidney harvesting is a complex procedure requiring trained specialists, and described the process where both donor and recipient are brought into the same operating theatre for the procedure.
